A typical late June weekend in Washington, D.C. as the weather was muggy... However, we were relieved to not have to hassle with the rain. Karts ran OK in the humidity, but certainly not great. Some practice starts were in order on Friday, as this was our first Pro Solo for the season, and Julian hadn't seen one for a year. For the most part, they went off without a hitch, and the whole family was able to see the green light in their respective karts (Mom and Dad in Shifters, Carson and Julian in KT100's).
Day 1
The left course was clearly going to be the slower with what amounted to a 110 degree turn after the long climb up the hill. The right course's same turn was only about 85 degrees. This seemed to be a definite factor for a low horsepower kart for sure. From his first run on the left, to his last run on the right, times dropped. Julian got through the morning set of runs completely clean, no cones, no redlights. That's good news as it will allow him to turn up the pace with confidence that he has something down.
It seems for the afternoon that the tuning of the kart wasn't quite as good as Julian didn't get any faster. He got no closer than six tenths on either side, but fortunately those morning runs were strong as he kept the rest of the field (including brother Carson) at bay by 4-5 seconds. It was in this set that he struck his first cone of the weekend, but nothing wasted in time.
Day 2
Sunday morning is always a day to get faster. Even when the conditions are colder, there's a lot more rubber laid down from Saturday's runs. This session was no better for Julian as he redlit two of his runs, with good cause though as he had a healthy lead and it was a good time to tempt the lights. That we recall, neither was a fastest time, so he actually sat on his second two runs of the weekend.
One of two Pros out of the way before the Finale in September, but the next one is only two weeks from this one...in Toledo...stay tuned!
