WDCR SCCA Solo
Event #3
FEDEX Field
Washington, D.C.

Looks like we were blessed with decent weather again, since we've now had FOUR rain events so far this year (actually a great thing as this helps the wet driving skills).... It's about 85 degrees and sunny (or 90 over the pavement), so other than a little heat in the kart suit, everything should be normal.

The entire Formula Junior contingent is present at the event and Julian's main class competition at these Regional events is his 8 yr old brother Carson, and as usual Julian will compare his times with Formula Junior A, the older age group. Prior to the Juniors running, the Fastest Time of the Day is held by a Shifter kart, 49.6 seconds, most fast cars being in the upper 50's. Julian's goal is always to run as fast as A Stock, or Porsche Boxters, Honda S2000's, and STi/Evos, all on race tires. They'll run later in the day.

The KT100 motor fires up as normal, is warmed up and doesn't seem to need any adjustments. We'll have to wait until after the first run to see if Julian has any suggestions on the carb settings once there's a load on the motor at full throttle. He takes his first run and gets a solid 57.1 seconds, no complaints about the tuning and now he's got some heat in the tires. His second run is a little faster but clips a cone and finishes with a 57.0, but add two-seconds for that cone so that run doesn't help. On his third run, he must have gotten a little loose or bogged, as he comes in with 57.5, clean, but no help. On his final run, Julian knows he's clean and pretty fast, so he'll go a little harder and take some risks...and it pays off with a 56.764, which gives him the win in the class.

Watching FJA (older kids, faster motors), Molly Kulbaski finishes with a 56.722. This is her best performance to date and beats Julian by four hundreths... That'll light a fire...

As Julian cools down for the day, he jumps up to watch A Stock winner Bren Benjermino in a C4 Corvette pass him with 56.604 on his last run, so he just missed his goal of beating the fastest A Stock driver of the day. No problem, plenty of events left.

The results are posted and Julian finishes 5th in the PAX index for the day. This is one of Julian's highest finishes in what is a general way to compare yourself to all drivers at the event.

Back to Rotax for the next weekend!
